Pool leaks can happen inside or outside of your pool. Check the entire filter system region, including the pump, filter, heater, chlorinator, and other components, before looking for a leak in your pool.

If you have an in-ground pool, cracks in the piping underground can cause leaks. Call a local pool professional to pressure test the lines for potential cracks if you suspect this. The first step in detecting a pool leak is to make sure you have one and aren’t losing water to evaporation.

The Bucket Method:

For this testing method you’ll need a king-size black marker or duct tape and a 22 litre plastic bucket.

Step 1: On the second step of your pool, place the empty 5-gallon bucket in the water. Fill the bucket with water to the same level as the tub. Mark this level inside the bucket with a marker or duct tape.

Step 2: Switch off the recirculating pump and any other auto-refill devices (if you have them).

Step 3: After 24 hours, compare the water level in the pool to the water level in the bucket. Your pool is losing water due to evaporation if both the pool and bucket water levels have decreased but are still equal. If the pool level has dropped below the level in the bucket then you most likely have a leak.

Step 4: Repeat the test for another 24-hour cycle, this time with the pump turned on, to narrow down the potential cause of the leak. If the pool’s water level is higher than the water flowing under pressure, the leak is most likely in the pool’s plumbing.

Dye Testing Method

This will aid in locating the source of the leak. Since the water stopped draining, you now know the height of the leak, and you know the area because the ground or pool wall would be wet.

Step 1: Before you use the dye to locate the leak, keep narrowing it down. If you’ve figured out where the leak is, hop in the pool and use the dye to pinpoint the exact spot.

Step 2: Go to the location where you believe the leak is. Slow down to avoid disturbing the stream.

Step 3: Using a squirt bottle, squirt the dye into the water near the wall. If the leak is near, the dye will travel like a current towards the source of the leak.
